We arrived in Koh Samui after a brutal two days of travel. Our hostel is the nicest we have stayed in at $17 CAD a night and listed as “deluxe.” The beach is a few steps outside of our room where they have a delicious restaurant with prices similar to Bangkok (a pizza was $5) and beach chairs, free towels, gorgeous sand, massages on the beach if you so wish.
I only have Cancun to compare this to so I have to... the waves here are MUCH larger and stronger. I’ve never actually seen waves that curl over. We went to play in them and man do they ever knock you around. After sitting and watching old fat people get completely pummelled by them, we thought we could do way better so we sauntered in. The first wave that hit me knocked my $200 sunglasses clean off my face. They belong to the cruel ocean now. It was my fault of course, for taking them in – it just didn’t occur to me. That didn’t stop B from looking for them though. She waded through with her head down, getting knocked clean on her ass several times. I knew hope was lost though so I just sat down and took the ocean’s punishment.
That was last night, today we got up in search for breakfast. Last night we found a good place for dinner with Chiang Mai prices and they had pancakes listed on the menu so we thought we’d try them out for breakfast. I got pancake with honey and B got pancake with pineapple. It tasted like scrambled eggs. It was so disgusting. B’s was pretty much raw... once I saw the raw egg coating her giant pineapple pieces I couldn’t take another bite. But to save face, since we planned on coming there for lunch and dinner, we put our uneaten pancakes in a plastic bag and took them home with us. Seriously.
On our way back to the hotel we found a very cute puppy. She was laying in the lobby area (everything here is open, not like an actual hotel.) As I’ve said, B won’t allow me to touch any stray animals. Apparently this doesn’t apply to puppies because she was on that like white on rice. We both sat down and gave that little pup some serious pets. We asked the owner what her name was but it turns out she’s just a stray dog who they take care of. B promptly started feeding it our bagged pancake which the dog did not like and spat out. Even a stray dog wouldn’t eat that.
We named her Mini, and she ended up following us back to our hotel room. Not my idea – B coaxed the dog back to our room, Mini came right in though. I gave her some fresh water in a tea cup and we decided to give her a bath. This didn’t go well as Mini doesn’t like the water so it was more of a splash than a bath. She got a good towel rubdown though.
After dognapping Mini for half an hour, we let her back out and she’s actually sitting beside me right now in the restaurant area. She just tried to bite a kid when it touched her so I think her love for us is genuine as she’ll let us do pretty much anything to her.
Yup, this is what life is like in paradise.
